Started in 1970, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated WORLDWIDE (193 countries!) each April 22nd, to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
In recent years, there has been an increased awareness for our environment on both a global and a local scale; proof of this can be seen in the beautifully crafted green space atop center-city Charlotte’s very own Ritz-Carlton hotel. This rooftop space houses more than just vibrant spring flowers and garden veggies, its home to more than 100,000 Cloister honey bees! It’s no secret that Cloister Honey takes pride in the local environment, by first and foremost saving the buzz!
It was 6 years ago on this day that Cloister Honey installed the first 2 beehives atop the Ritz Carlton in celebration of Earth Day. Since then, these bees have helped this rooftop garden double in size. The fruits, veggies, and herbs grown here are used by the hotel chef and sold in their Lobby Farmers Market and Community Garden. Even the honey these hives produce is used in the Ritz’s kitchen, at Bar Cocoa, in cocktails at The Punch Room, and in detox treatment at the hotel spa!
